Spring has arrived, later than last year for sure, but it's finally here and making up for lost time. The skies are blue, the flowers are blooming and the grass needs cutting once again.
OK, that last one I'm not so keen on, but at least the grass isn't as tough as the grass back in Australia. Nor does it need cutting on a fortnightly basis.
The change in weather seemed quite sudden, and because of that the longer days also seemed to appear without much warning. One morning I realised I was waking at 5am (or earlier) simply because it was light outside.
For a number of reasons, and I'm sure the arrival of Spring is part of it, I feel really quite optimistic at the moment. I got to work with a spring in my step, a song in my heart, and a bunch of other cliches. Someone even mentioned they'd noticed I was whistling at work last week. I hadn't noticed it myself, although I know I whistle. Fortunately they told me they quite liked hearing it. I have, of course, become quite self-conscious in the office now and have stopped myself a couple of times as I was about to launch into song.
The writing continues, slowly, but this beast is being lashed into shape. I like where it's heading. I hope you will too.

The Universe Says Yes.
This has been a bizarre week here at Chateau Cameron.
I don't think it's any secret I've been questioning my writing for some time now. Wondering whether I'm wasting my time or not. Wondering if anyone even reads my words. Wondering whether I could even write. So it was fantastic to receive encouragement this week. It's been a long time since I've felt optimistic about my writing, and to receive two separate rejections that were positive and supportive was just what I needed.
On the work front, too, I have received encouragement from the unlikeliest of places. Not once, but three times in three separate incidents. Comments made by people who go out of their way to let you know you're doing a good job, and it's appreciated. That's enough to put a spring in even the most jaded of steps.
And then the universe chooses to send messages of support.
Coincidence? Perhaps. Metaphysical? Maybe. But it feels like there's more to it when you consider plans and make a decision, only to receive four or five distinct signs that you've done the right thing.
Oh, and then I woke up to more good news this morning. Not a sale, but information that put a smile on my face.
Have a great week.

Gotta Wear Shades?
I sold a story this week, which is great news. It's a story I really like, and when I wrote it I was riffing off a story by one of my favourite short story writers, Katherine Mansfield. I was surprised when it was straight out rejected at a number of markets without any comment. I'd never been so confident of selling a story before. Finally, one editor made a short comment and with a quick rewrite, he bought the story. All good, in the end.
But despite selling a story this week, I've been a little pessimistic about my writing future. I don't feel like I'm advancing and improving, although it may simply be that the progress is slow. Being in Australia I don't feel like we have the same opportunities and access to SF workshops and masterclasses that our American peers have. And I haven't yet cracked that pro-market barrier.
I am, of course, extremely grateful to SuperNOVA, my writers' group. Their comments, insights and critiques have taught me a great deal. And generally they have been very kind with their feedback.
This morning, I noticed a posting on Facebook from someone I know. A young woman in her first year of university. She simply said she was excited for the future and feeling wonderful.
I have no idea whether this is a general feeling towards life, or whether she's received some significant news, but I'm thrilled for her that she's so optimistic.
Now while I have plans and hopes for my writing future, I don't know whether optimistic is the word I would use for me. But it's certainly a wonderful state to be in, and one that I'm hoping to achieve.

Nagging Optimism.
I have a feeling the next twelve months are going to be great.
In my working life, in my personal life and in my writing life, I feel as though the future is shiny. I don't have any news, or any secret information I can't share, but a few things are starting to happen around me.
Perhaps I'm mistaken. Perhaps it's my attitude that has changed and I'm just seeing the world around me through this optimistic filter. But I can't help but feel it's more than that. And even if it is just a better outlook, that's not a bad thing, is it? A positive view and good things happening - which is cause, and which is effect?
But I want to make things happen in a number of areas. I have plans that I've put in place and so far they seem to be paying off.
Keep watching to see where the road leads me.
